Know Thy Enemy, Part 2
Recently, in the interest of knowing thy enemy even more so, I emailed Jack Thompson.
This is what I sent.

Subject: Questions of a Concerned Citizen
Greetings.
I am working for an online news publication, and am a webcomic artist. I've read a lot about your involvement with the Devin Thompson trial, and I would like to get clarification regarding your position. Towards that end, and in the interest of being objective, I would ask you some questions. With your wisdom, I am certain more light can be shed on the subject.
1. What exactly has led you to believe that it was Video Games that influenced Devin Thompson into committing the killings he allegedly performed? Did he inform you himself? Or was it information from a 3rd party? You need not answer this one if this violates attorney-client privilege.
2. What criteria do you use for determining which games could pose a threat to our children? Are there specific games you'd recommend be avoided? How would you go about alerting parents as to the supposed dangers?
3. How much consideration do you give to the idea that the responsibility for shielding kids from sex and violenceshould lie with the parents, instead of game developers or retailers, as kids are, by and large, not the ones who are purchasing the games?
4. How do you feel about retailers that have already imposed restrictions on the release of M-rated games, such as Toys-R-Us? This company, for instance, requires that all M-rated game purchasers show ID as proof of age before retailing games to minors, and failure to do so can result in the employee's termination.
I'll be anxiously awaiting your reply.

So anyway, I recieved a response today.

kiss the video game industry good-bye
I could not believe this response. At all. For one, look how late it came in. Only idiots like me are supposed to be up at this hour. Second, look at it. Not a single capital letter, any punctuation, and nothing in my email was addressed at all. I immediately assumed that this was answered by one of his secretaries or the like.
Then, I went and asked Adam and Dan about this, who have fought with Thompson on message boards in the past. Turns out, the rumor is true; he has the online speech capacity of a typical 13-year-old AOLer.
Not content with getting no answer, I emailed Thompson a second time.

I choose to note, with some dismay, that you did not answer my questions. The contact information on your website says, verbatim:
"This site's purpose is to give you the means to contact Miami attorney Jack Thompson if you know of someone harmed as a result of violent entertainment, including violent video games."
I'm writing an article about Devin Thompson incident. Aren't the three officers he allegedly killed "someone harmed as a result of violent entertainment?" You could at least do the honorable thing, and give me a response of more than once sentence.
I logged on tonight, and found I garnered another reply. This one.... Christ, where to begin.

read again whom I want to have contact me. have the games fucked your brain up? it says to only contact me if you have been harmed. fuck off.
And that, my friends, means war. No one tells Jaimas to fuck off until Jaimas does something worthy of being told to fuck off. I will have my vengeance. Oh, yes. I will. And vengence will be outlined in my next LJ post. Ready yourself, my allies on the front. Tonight, we go to teach Jack Thompson some humility.
